Leukemia

What is the first stage of leukaemia?

Doctors do not use standard staging methods, such as the TNM system, unlike many other cancers, to stage leukaemia. Instead, a doctor will first determine the subtype of leukaemia through diagnostic tests and then use a unique system for each subtype.

Factors that affect the survival rate

There are also two related types of epithelial cancer that can spread to the ovaries:

  • Age
  • Time of diagnosis
  • Progression and spread of the cancer
  • Type of leukaemia
  • A family history of blood conditions and leukaemia
  • The extent of bone damage
  • Exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene and some petrochemicals
  • Exposure to certain types of chemotherapy and radiation therapy
  • Chromosome mutations
  • The body’s response to treatment
  • Blood cell count
  • Tobacco use

Can leukaemia be cured?

While there is currently no cure for leukaemia, it is possible to treat the cancer to prevent it from coming back.

Treatment success depends on a range of factors. Treatment can include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Stem cell transplant
  • Antibiotics

Frequently Asked Questions

What is leukaemia?

Leukaemia is a cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood. It begins when the body produces too many abnormal white blood cells, which do not function properly.

What are the different types of leukaemia?

Leukaemia is categorised into four main types: acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).

What causes leukaemia?

The exact cause is often unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Exposure to radiation, certain chemicals, and genetic predisposition can increase the risk.
